What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is simply an artificial dental root. Dental Implants can provide a strong foundation for permanent teeth or base for a full or partial removable dentures.

Overview

When a patient has missing teeth: crowns, conventional bridges or dentures do not have to be the only solution. Dental implants are a new and booming procedure that is used to replace dentures and bridges that simultaneously offers a smile that looks and feels natural.

Implants offer stability because they fuse to the bone by a process called Osseointegration. Integration of the implants into the jaw bone helps the replacement teeth feel more natural and stable.

Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. A thorough evaluation by Dr. Shirazi will help determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.

How Successful Are Dental Implants?

In general, dental implants have a success rate of 92% to 98%. With proper care, implants can last a lifetime. In some rare cases failure may occur. In case of failure the procedure can be repeated after allowing enough time for healing to occur.

Can Anyone Get Dental Implants?

In most cases any healthy individual can have dental implants. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to support the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders - such as diabetes or heart disease - or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you are considering dental implants, come in for our free no obligation dental implant consultation to find out if you are a good candidate.

Does Insurance Cover the Cost of Dental Implants?

In general, dental implants are covered by PPO dental insurance at this time. However, our trained personell always checks with your insurance company before quoting prices.

How Painful Are Dental Implants?

Most people who have received dental implants by our institute report that there is very little discomfort involved following the procedure. Local anesthesia is usually used during the procedure and most patients report that implants involve less pain than a tooth extraction or a root canal. After the dental implant mild soreness can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol or Advil.

Usually our patients can go back to their daily routine the very next day.
